No matter if you’re a fan of natural sunlight or not, you still might have a room or two you’d prefer to keep as dark as possible, whether it’s a bedroom, a nursery, or a media room. So if you’re thinking about getting new window treatments in one of those rooms, now’s the time to consider how best to control as much light as possible. At F&R Interiors, we can help you find shades that block light in Los Angeles area with the right fabric opacity and the right solution. Check out a few of our suggestions below!

Consider Outside Mount

Natural light is both a blessing and a bane in many instances, and we totally get how frustrating it can be to try to control it, especially when it comes to light gaps at the sides of your shades or blinds. Those gaps are inevitable when the treatment is mounted on the inside of the frame because if the treatment were cut exactly to the window frame, it would rub the frame and cause wear and tear to the sides of the treatment. However, if you mount the treatment on the outside, you can cover the window entirely. Your options for mounting outside include to mount the treatment on, outside of, or above the window frame, which reduces light gaps (although you might still have a little bit of glow beneath the treatment). Plus, this look will make your room seem taller, and when you raise the treatment, you’ll have a completely unobstructed view through your window.

Block Light and Close Gaps

If you’re looking at Duette® Honeycomb Shades, Hunter Douglas has created the perfect solution for dealing with the light gap: The LightLock® feature. This innovation is U-shaped side channels that fit on the window frame and absorb or reflect almost all of the incoming light. You can also think about the lesser-quality light-blocking strips that are available at most local big box stores. These strips are L-shaped PVC designed to mount on the window frame and help cut back that extra side light.

Layer Your Window

You can also add layers to your window, which is both functional and aesthetically pleasing. Side panels can bring depth and dimension to the space, and you’ll create a one-of-a-kind look that matches your room’s style.
