Bringing Contemporary Design to the Home

Often confused with modern design, which is rooted in the middle of the 1900s, contemporary design is for people who like to work with trending pieces and styles. With contemporary style, you’ll see rounded, clean lines and neutral colors (with some pops of brighter color in accents). It is simple yet sophisticated, with updated materials and on-trend shapes and textures. Here’s how to give your space a contemporary look:

1. Reduce

Unclutter. Too much décor is too much. Don’t use every piece you have. Instead, keep only the pieces you truly love, and your space will start to feel updated and fresh.

2. Make It Neutral

Choose neutrals such as beige, gray, white, and cream. You could also use black as a grounding color. Next add pops of color through accessories, artwork, or window fashions. If you’d prefer to make your walls a bright color, use neutrals everywhere else.

3. Use Textures

Texture can come from a variety of things, including metal, stone, and glass. Also consider your textiles, such as silk, wool, linen, and cotton, which can appear in accent pillows or rugs. Wall designs in geometric patterns can add great visual texture, as can houseplants, which will also soften a space by adding unique shapes and gentle greens. Window treatments can add texture as the focal point. Consider Provenance® Woven Woods, which are made from natural reeds, woods, grass, and bamboo, to add nature to the room.

4. Get the Lighting Right

In contemporary design, light and shadow coalesce to add depth and create visual interest. Use light both from above as well as from below to create interesting lines in the room. Natural light can do some work too—the right window treatment can transform the light the way you want. Speak with one of our specialists about what might be the best for your situation today.
